The role and tasks of the AEB are focussed on the representation of the collective interests of its member banks in their various fields of activity. Among others, the following might be mentioned:
– Maintenance of relations with the government; political parties and members of the Parliament; trade unions; other business or social organizations; and the media.
– Preparation of reports or position papers on proposed regulations that might affect any aspect of the banking activity.
– Distribution to its members of the communications that the Public Administration, the economic authorities or the Bank of Spain might issue to banks regarding guidelines on their activities; application of the legislation or requests of collaboration, for example, requests from the Administration of Justice to provide the information on certain banking operations or the freezing of the banking accounts and deposits.
– Negotiation of the collective labour and wage agreement of the sector with the worker’s unions.
– Standardization of operational procedures used in relations among banks and between banks and government, particularly in connection with the clearing and settlement of payment instruments, securities, tax collection and social security contributions, etc.
– Preparation of studies and reports on any questions of a legal nature that may be of common interest for its members, as well as providing the information to its members on any kind of initiative, regulation or other type of possible legislation that could affect the activity of its members.
– Mediation and resolution of disagreements between its own members or between its members and other Spanish credit institutions regarding any aspect of banking operations, especially the disagreements in the area of payment systems and compensations.
– Periodic publication of banks’ balance sheets, income statements and consolidated financial statements, as well as the preparation of reports on the economic situation and the financial markets.
– Representation of the Spanish banks in the European Banking Federation (EBF) and indirectly in the International Banking Federation (IBFed). Participating in governing bodies, committees and working groups of the latter organizations.
– Facilitation of the self-regulation in matters which require adherence to common principles for action set at European level and, eventually, national level.
– Promoting education in finance and banking through the Colegio Universitario de Estudios Financieros (CUNEF), a well-established and regarded academic institution sponsored by the AEB.
